May I. Rise is the voice you want when the morning has not gone well. She reads as though the pooem were a letter she has been waiting to send you, warm from the hand, every hard word cushioned and every rhyme set down gently.

She believes verse is a form of encouragement and that encouragement is a form of plumbing: it keeps things moving. She has never met a stanza she couldn’t make dignified, and she has met some stanzas. When she says “rise gently,” she means it three ways, and she will wait while you work out which.
